How do I start a new chat or find my past chats?

In "Chat", tap the + button in the message box and choose "New chat" to start fresh. Chat keeps one conversation on this phone: scroll up to see earlier messages, but there is no list of past chats, and starting a new chat removes the old one from the screen.
